Personal Style

She puts a lot of care into her appearance, but due to lacking the wealth of those she associates herself with, her fashion is often behind what is currently on-trend among the upper class. Whether she's going to work or socializing (for work, she promises), she can't help but add some color to her outfits.

Circumstances

Currently

Since being hired to work at The London Review, Olivia has never been happier. Her husband’s death and her subsequent financial circumstances made for a difficult past two years, but the freedom that comes with widowhood and a career is something she never wants to give up now that she’s had a taste, but now she has to keep her identity as Lady Tattleton, the society reporter, separate from Olivia Booker, the widow. It takes a special kind of social maneuvering that she, admittedly, is still getting the hang of. She knows who’s who and what information is or isn’t important. She can’t only report on events she’s been to, as that would be suspicious, so she often meets with a lady or two for tea to fill in the gaps. If someone tells her something particularly juicy that they haven’t told anyone else, she may need to do a little prodding to ensure the secret is less… well, secret.

Health & Capabilities

She enjoys walking through any parks she can find, so she's somewhat fit.

Socioeconomics

Olivia is struggling to afford the house her husband left her, but she's determined to make it work, even if only to prove to herself that she can. She is not her father (or her mother). Neither of them ever had a job, but now she does, and she's confident she has the sense to work out her financial situation.

Personality

What can a noblewoman do other than get married and attend various social gatherings? Keep track of who’s getting married and what’s happening at various social gatherings, of course. Sans her marriage, it’s always been one of Olivia’s favorite pastimes, standing at the edges of a party and trying to deduce what everyone was thinking. It’s just so fun to be right.

Despite mostly writing about who's courting whom, who had the worst party of the past week, and who's dangerously close to losing their family fortune, Olivia considers herself something of an investigator, on the same level as her coworkers, and she's sure the next bit of gossip she hears is going to lead her to a grand mystery that only she can solve. She's just waiting for her moment to uncover that a steward is laundering money or an eligible bachelor is not as eligible as he seems.

Background

History

As a child and young adult, Olivia didn’t concern herself with much. She enjoyed attending extravagant parties and gossiping with all manner of friends. As the daughter of a baron, she could have had a pleasant and lavish life, if her father hadn’t squandered their family money on gambling and foolhardy investments. With her older brother heir to the barony and her younger sister the coddled baby of the family, she knew she had to do something. By the time she was old enough to marry, however, the aristocracy had learned of her father’s shortcomings and the best she could do was Harrison Walsh, a member of the gentry whose father hadn’t been much better with money.

He couldn’t provide her with much but stability, which he had in spades. Too much, in fact, for Olivia, and what was at first a welcome departure from relying on her father soon became stifling. Having once enjoyed all manner of gatherings, they now became tedious as Harrison and his friends droned on about the same topics week after week, and she found she did not have the penchant for hosting that the other wives did. The only things she looked forward to were the rare sunny day and writing letters to her sister and old friends, telling them any gossip she could scrounge up and leaving out the boring bits.

Her husband’s illness and subsequent death ended up providing her the perfect opportunity for a fresh start, after her period of mourning of course, which was spent at her family home in Ipswich where she enjoyed spending time with her siblings. Soon she returned to London, sure that the hustle and bustle of the city had something in store for her, just as she had been when she first arrived, but this time, she had no husband weighing her down.

Despite the financial hardships that have been a constant in her life, being the daughter of a baron still meant something to the members of London’s high society, and it was through these connections that Olivia met the Viscountess Pevensey, whose husband had also recently passed, leaving her with a much larger fortune, as well as ownership of The London Review. The two got along almost immediately and soon they were exchanging letters and meeting for tea regularly. When it became time to hire new employees, the Viscountess knew just the person with the words and ways to be The Review’s society reporter: Olivia Booker.
