Introduction
To be seen feeling anything strips you naked, Anne Carson from Red Doc
Appearance
Notable Features
A prominent Roman nose, his accent is thick and burly, his muscles cause most of his clothes to look just slightly too small for him despite being afforded a wardrobe from his employment. And though it is frowned upon, he has a few tattoos hidden from plain view - a bull to represent Birmingham, a raven for his mother, a coin's face for his father and a Himalayan cedar for his Uncle (a tree which was planted at Birmingham Botanical Gardens in the 1840s, of which Johnny used to stare up at in wonder)Personal Style
Being working class means that one is not given the luxury of fashion, for Johnny’s clothes were always either basic working clothes or hand me downs that he had long since outgrown. Most are stained with the earth, or entrenched with the smells of nature (that can be both nice, pleasant and downright awful). He often wears a tweed cap scuffed at the rim, and a coat inherited from his Uncle upon his passing which still smells like him, and brings great comfort. Obviously he keeps to neutral colours, but he does have a preference for blues and greens, if he was ever given the pleasure of choice.Circumstances
Currently
Having lived his whole life beneath the servitude of others, Johnny knows no different than the constant toil of hard work. You find him now not far from where he began, though you are to know that he has recently succeeded in becoming the Head Gardener of Somerset House, owned by the Duke of Somerset. He manages a team of gardeners and knows the House inside out after having moved there from Hertfordshire in 1881. He is known for his stoicism, but his coldness can easily be melted by a friendly face.Health & Capabilities
Despite his dodgy early start in the Workhouse and even the Prison, Johnny is good of heart and survived the few epidemics of Smallpox that took Birmingham by storm from 1871-74 (of which also killed his cousins who he lived with and his Aunt). Muscled and physically fit, Johnny is well off compared to others of his social class due to the fact that he has not lived his entire life in the smog of London.Socioeconomics
Born to a Workhouse and brought up in the undergrowth of Birmingham, Johnny has never known life without living from paycheck to paycheck. Only recently has he been afforded the position of ordering others as the Head Gardener of Somerset House, a role that has given some freedom to his pockets. He keeps saved up money (the small handfuls of extras, at least) beneath the mattress in his rooms, of which are held beneath Somerset House in the servant’s quarters.Skills & Talents
⚘ Hardworking, to the point of being a detriment to his well being, Johnny puts work first above all else⚘ Gardening, a skill he has learned by constant work, though it’s to be said that he actually has very little passion for it he has learned over time how to tend to the smallest flower, the largest tree and the rarest of specimens.
⚘ Athletic, outside of his manual labour, Johnny is known to enjoy sport and has a hefty passion for the still-new clubs, Moseley Rugby and Aston Villa FC, he hopes to put together a team for the guys at Somerset House, but mostly everyone is occupied with work
⚘ Basic First Aid if only because he has been forced to fix scrapes and cuts due to work
Identity
Hobbies
His work does not give way to hobbies, mostly his chosen profession as a Gardener was decided due to convenience and ease of getting the job itself due to family. Hardly given the time to pretend that he has any excess hours to devote to hobbies or leisure, Johnny mostly keeps to himself in his free time, sleeping or eating… Perhaps walking, if one was to push for an answer. If he was given the freedom of his betters, perhaps Johnny would have taken up sports, something of a physical matter at least, for Johnny can only read to a very basic level.Habits & Routines
Johnny is rarely seen beyond Somerset House, if only because he is constantly at work in the gardens or the greenhouse itself. Beyond that place of grandeur, Johnny is sometimes afforded the rare moment to enjoy what the city has on offer. In plain terms, pubs.Personality

History
Born to a murderer and a desperate woman, Johnny was never meant to amount to much having arrived to the world within the inner, deeper sanctum of the Birmingham Union Workhouse. The situation was dire, a place in which his parents were forced to turn when his father lost his job and his mother grew plump with his child. But violence was rife, and it didn’t take long for Johnny’s father, Arthur, to grow intertwined with danger itself, leaving his son without a guide as he was sent to the slick of the gallows. His mother, Fanny, wasn’t much better, for without her lover she resorted to stealing and playing tricks, which left their superiors ripping through her belongings to find stolen goods that had belonged to other residents instead. As such, Fanny was sent to the West Midlands Prison for Women with Johnny balanced on her hip.The prison was no place for a baby, but it was not rare or unheard of to see single mothers nursing their tender and crying offspring beside killers, swindlers and the innocent. By the time her sentence was up, his mother left Johnny on her cousins’ doorstep. Some like to say that Fanny was selfish and stupid in her final act…. Even fewer claimed that she suffered the fate of many women, and that she would have hurt her child if left alone. Most, however, thought it unfair for the Miller household to take care of their infant nephew, but what were they to do? Out of the love for family, and the reluctance of letting an innocent toddler disappear into the system, his cousins all but adopted Johnny as their own.
Raised on leftovers and hand-me-downs, Johnny clung to life with the stubbornness of a tick. At ten years old (taller than most, who ate more than his cousins and stood out like a sore thumb), his uncle got him a position to work alongside him on the grounds of Birmingham Botanical Gardens — a place in which he came to learn about hierarchy, time-keeping and the natural world. Menial labour was not for the faint hearted, but Johnny grew broad and strong, each day was a test to his resilience, each hour a testament to what he could become. Even Anthony, the fair-hearted Uncle who gave him a chance, was impressed with the level of duty and hard work installed in his sister’s son. Perhaps it all came down to the world he had been born into, having seen the dire lives lived out in the Workhouse through young eyes, or maybe it was simply to earn the attention of those who had been forced to feed him in those early years.
Either way, when the Smallpox epidemic hit Birmingham, the family was reduced once more with the many deaths of his cousins. And when his Aunt dies after years of being bedridden by illness Anthony Miller, his dear uncle, finds himself driven to the point of madness. Having lost his children and now his wife, he makes a snap decision to uproot himself and his nephew from Birmingham to find work elsewhere. As his handsome and hard-working apprentice, the two are employed at Ashby Castle, Northamptonshire, a world in which Johnny finds himself introduced to those in power. It’s rumoured that the daughter of the Marquess had fancied him awfully, so much so that Johnny was forced to work at night! Still, rumours come and go. Don’t they?
By his eighteenth birthday, his Uncle is found dead after coming home drunk from the pub. Alone again (but with the added weight of funerary bills), Johnny finally asks for help. Due to his known reputation of being a hard-worker and steadfastly loyal, the Marquess himself leads him to the direction of the Earl Brownlow at Ashbridge House, Hertfordshire. From one house to another, Johnny is employed as a gardener there till he meets a certain Mr Hill, who is on the lookout for young hands to help him in the renewal project of a grand house in London. Whilst taking a chance, and if in some vain hope of finding another person to act as a role model, Johnny follows Mr Hill to Somerset House on the Thames in Central London instead.
The city was a new experience, a world in which opens up a wide chasm of opportunities, so much so that for a while Johnny is close to both sinking and drowning due to the weight of such a change. But he remained stoic in his survival, dipping and diving till he came up fresh and ready for the new world he has found himself among. With Mr Hill’s retirement, Johnny asked for the opportunity to become his successor… And so he does, by some miraculous turn of events. Though it’s to be said that Johnny’s loneliness is sharp and unavoidable, even if he tends to bury his head beneath the roses of Somerset House in the meantime.
Plotting
Romance
Johnny was once deemed too handsome to be seen by the debutantes of his betters, thus forced to work entirely at night to avoid the wandering and troublesome eyes of such girls. Romantically, Johnny has been intertwined with maids and working girls, but mostly he keeps himself to himself. He needs someone to coax him out of his shell. Traits that can apply to wannabe lovers: Honest, Independent, Good Natured.. But even then, Johnny’s relationships have always been made out of convenience more than anything else.Friends
By the first decade of his life, Johnny was mostly, if not always, alone. Alone to the point of isolation, it took some time for Johnny to develop proper social skills. Still, he is a kind man and open to any kinds of friendship as long as they do not endanger his position and life beneath the banner of the Duke of Somerset. When he's outside of work, and rather enjoying what little freetime he has at the nearby pubs, Johnny develops an almost fun personality that far outranks the serious nature he applies at work. Traits that can apply to his kind of friendships: Supportive, Considerate & Steadfast.Antagonism
The staff of Somerset House have their ups and downs, and personalities are always due to rub up against one another in the wrong way. Mostly, Johnny gets on with everyone, but he is sometimes swayed to rebel against certain roles in order to get what he wants done quickly and easily. Ideally, he wouldn’t have to argue with anyone, but sometimes it just has to happen. Traits for apathetic relationships: Conservative, Ambitious & Mean-SpiritedKinks
