Appearance

Notable Features

Sila has long hair that goes past his belt line and many scars from childhood, which he rarely discusses. A point of pride for him is the scar on his shoulder from where a bear mauled him, but he survived. He has various lines tattooed on his wrist, which people mistake for a bracelet at a distance. The marking is to atone for harpooned walrus that got away and undoubtedly died suffering.

Personal Style

Some people would think him Asian if he were not so tall, and others would find some other culture befitting his well-tanned skin. At over six feet, there is no shortage of height where Silas is concerned; the men in his family have always been built like trees, tall and stout. He has black hair and dark brown eyes that often seem black in the right lighting or lack thereof. His face has broad features (i.e., nose and lips) and a strong jaw. Facial features are not the only broad thing about him. Silas has broad shoulders that compliment his trim physique.

Occupation

Artist

Property

Co-owns a home in Highgate with Felicité Findlay.

He always has a sketchbook and pencils in a brass case for cigarettes and a sketchbook with a beaded cover. He keeps a sharp folding knife with a removable flint striker in the handle, which he considers lucky.

Relationship Status

Publicly Involved
Circumstances

Currently

Sila is engaged to Felicity Findlay and is not looking to meet anyone else. He may be quiet around strangers, but he is a great friend to anyone who will have him. Sila tries to find models for his art and is often spotted working the docks when his art has been slow or working through a creative block.

Health & Capabilities

Despite his height, which some might consider absurd for the time, Sila is in excellent health. He has a muscular figure from his heavy manual labor at the docks. Sila is very strong, fit, and capable of feats of strength and endurance.

Socioeconomics

Sila is not rich, but he is not scraping the barrel. He was homeless when he first came to London, following his heart rather than making a plan. He is not financially minded and habitually gives most of his money to his fiancé so he does not squander it. His uncles would spoil him if he wrote to them for anything and Felicité provides him a home and resources for his art. He is provided for but poor due to his pride or inability to make proper financial decisions.

Habits & Routines

Sila has a habit of silently observing those around him. His silent, brooding appearance and lumbering form intimidate people, though he is as sweet as a teddy bear to anyone who gets to know him. He likes to go to public places like parks and the market to watch people. When they allow him, Sila likes to go to museums to study the work of other artists. He can sit staring at one piece for hours. He works at the docks and is reserved but will converse with anyone who gives him the time. Last and most importantly, he is often in the company of Felicité Findlay and the artist community she associates with.

Personality

Sila is a quiet and observant man, which makes him intimidating to those who do not know him. Much of this is due to his constant self-editing. He overthinks his words to the point that the conversation has already moved on before Sila decides what he wants to say. Since he is more interested in hearing what the other person has to say, it is easy for him to set aside his thoughts for the sake of others unless grave importance is tied to them. Sila is among the most loyal and considerate people his friends and colleagues know. Sila is calm under pressure, and though he may overthink his words, he is never hesitant about actions. If he knows he is right about something, he will not budge. Sila is stubborn, personified in that case. Sila is the sort of man who will give revenge to someone found deserving.

Date of Birth

4 November 1865
Background

History

Sila was born to an Inuit fur trader and the French-Indian daughter of a fur trader. According to Jus sanguinis, the ‘right of blood,’ he would be considered French because of his mother’s claimed nationality and Canadian because of his father's. His Inuit relatives (of the Labrador’s Inuit-Métis variety) have believed him Inuit by the principle of jus soli, which means the ‘right of soil,’ since he was born in Newfoundland.

Sila’s mother, Noel, did not look mixed; she appeared a delicate French rose. His father was tall and considered imposing by the Canadians of Newfoundland, whereas other Inuit saw him as a protector. By the time he was five, the Canadians had taken Sila and other children from their parents. They shipped them to a Catholic Indian Residential Boarding School, †Saint Anthony’s (Windsor) Residential School. This is where Sila believes his life to have begun. His earliest memories were full of service, discipline, and religion. Sila was an exemplary student. He could cite anything from the bible, chapter, and verse, to the point he would correct his instructors if they misquoted or invented scripture. It did not make him many fans when he did this. The reprimands were harsh, traumatic, and even deadly. He never died, but there were a couple of times he came close for speaking out of turn. This is where he learned to think before he spoke.

When his schooling was complete, Sila had trouble adjusting to life as a servant. He left his employer's home without notice the first chance he got, went north, and lived with his family for a few years. After his time in the Residential School, Sila felt he did not belong among the Inuit any more than he did among Canadians. Eventually, he found work with the army. Did he want to work with the army? No, but they drug him along to help track, though he primarily acted as a war artist, documenting their exploits. During this time, the commanding officer took a shine on Sila and paid out of pocket for his services. Living among the Canadians made him tense with just cause, but being among the Inuit made him irrationally uncomfortable.

While working with the army company on various occasions, he abandoned his role as an artist and took up arms or rushed in to defend a soldier in need. Some appreciated it; others openly resented that the artist had to save them in a pinch. Be it out of appreciation or a bit of cheek; the men started calling Sila “Sergeant” or “Sarge.” It was often used in the same respect as one might call a bald man “curly.” Eventually, Sila fell out of love with the work. The commanding officer had changed, and the new man in charge was unwilling to pay the same wage. Granted, his previous employer had been paying for far more than art, not that Sila saw it that way. The other officer had no interest in bedding the artist.

The opportunity came to travel with his uncle, Gaston, Noel’s youngest sibling, to France, so he took that offer and spent April of 1885 getting to know that side of his mother’s heritage. The French were surprisingly inviting to him, and even more when he spoke their language, if only as well as his mother. While in France, he met a visiting artist, Felicité Findlay, who was only there temporarily. Sila took a shine to her and followed her to London. There, he eventually expressed his interest in Felicité and her art community. By the Summer of 1888, they were engaged.

†Saint Anthony’s (Windsor) Residential School: A fictional Residential School near Windsor Lake in St. John, Newfoundland. The fictional school was a Roman Catholic institution where native children were broken of ties to their “questionable” heritage or just broken.
Plotting

Romance

Romance with Felicité yes, with others... less likely. He could be easily pressured into some sexual acts with men mainly because he was conditioned from a young age to "be nice." He will resent men he feels took advantage of him.

Friends

Sila will accept virtually any friendship he can find. He is quiet, which can make him appear shy, but if someone can get past that and let him get comfortable, he will make friends. Sila is willing to entertain almost any friendship plot.

Antagonism

Sila does not go looking to be disliked, but if there is a reason he is disliked, it is a plot worth considering.

Other Plot Requests

Sila is always looking for models for his art, so any character willing to have their likeness captured for any purpose, it is a plot worth discussing.
