Maggie's Place

[Canons listed here.]

Established in 1883, Maggie's Place is an exclusively homosexual brothel at Number 19 Cleveland Street, located in Soho, very close to the Middlesex Hospital and its medical school. Opened and funded in extreme secrecy by Lord Oscar FitzMaurice, Viscount Kirkwall and heir to the Earl of Orkney, it operates with extreme discretion. Between FitzMaurice's family connections, and the efforts of the wily former constable Martin Love, the illegal and licentious happenings at the unassuming terrace house are overlooked by the London Metropolitan Police. Because of its relatively secure location and the secrecy it promises, Maggie's Place has cultivated a predominately upper-class clientele. Many of the prostitutes working there have other, respectable jobs; many are telegram messengers, academics, or have families wealthy enough to (if only partially) support them.

Recently the manager of the brothel, Madame Douglas, resigned her position and left abruptly. Rumors abound among the rent boys about exactly why the woman left. Popular theories are that she became involved with Meredith Trevor, Lord FitzMaurice's favorite, or that she was found to be stealing from the brothel's funds. Regardless of the reason, Madame Douglas departed approximately six months prior, leaving Martin Love to pick up the slack. The man has done an admirable job, but the stress involved in the work has begun to take its toll on the former constable. Lord FitzMaurice has also been shorter of temper since Madame Douglas' departure, putting the entire house on edge.

For now, Maggie's Place remains fully operational and its secrets are intact. This isn't the first rough patch that the brothel has experienced, and will likely not be the last. Gossip is always abounding, especially given the many noblemen that frequent the establishment, and like all gossip surely it will pass and be replaced by some new juicy tidbit.
